APS Shade Tree Program!

My friend Doreen Pollack, who is the Garden Goddess, an expert in community and residential gardens and someone who serves on the board of the Valley Permaculture Guild, now is coordinating the APS Shade Tree Program.  When she told me that you could get up to 3 shade trees FOR FREE from APS, I wanted to hear more and I thought you would too!  So she crafted this small announcement about the program.

Planting shade trees in your yard can save you up to $50 per year on your energy bill by blocking the sun’s rays and reducing your cooling needs. The APS Shade Tree program provides free shade tree workshops and free trees to help you maximize your energy savings.

The following requirements must be met to qualify for this program:

  • · Must be a current APS residential customer living in Maricopa County
  • · Must be able to plant the trees approximately 15 feet away  from the western, eastern or southern side of your home
  • · Must have the legal right to plant the trees on the property
  • · Must have the ability to care for the tree as needed
  • · Must attend an APS Shade Tree workshop

The current APS Shade Tree workshop and tree pickup dates are May 14 and May 21 in Glendale. You can learn more about this program and register for a workshop at aps.com/trees. You must register for the workshop to attend.

The Valley Permaculture Alliance is working with APS to deliver this program. We hope to see many of you who are APS customers at the May 14, 21 and future 2011 workshops and tree pickup events.

  1. Is that 15 feet requirement a max? min? or exact distance?

  2. Doreen Pollack says:

15 feet MAX. put the trunk at the 15ft mark. The canopy of the trees will need the space to the house and provide great shading of the facade of the house.

  3. Eddie Jones says:

Does this program apply to new 1 story owner occupied commercial in Tempe?

  4. Doreen Pollack says:

Sorry Eddie, this is for RESIDENTIAL APS customers only.

thanks for the heads up Taz! My sister is going to take advantage of this in her pre 1980 home near Paradise Gardens in NE PHX 🙂
